Rosemary Sutcliff (1920-1992) wrote dozens of books for young readers, including her award-winning Roman Britain trilogy, The Eagle of the Ninth, The Silver Branch, and The Lantern Bearers, which won the Carnegie Medal. The Eagle of the Ninth is now a major motion picture, The Eagle, directed by Kevin MacDonald and starring Channing Tatum. Born in Surrey, Sutcliff spent her childhood in Malta and on various other naval bases where her father was stationed. At a young age, she contracted Still's Disease, which confined her to a wheelchair for most of her life. Shortly before her death, she was named Commander of the British Empire (CBE) one of Britain's most prestigious honors. She died in West Sussex, England, in 1992.

Ich hatte die ersten beiden Bücher vor über dreißig Jahren als Teenager aus der Bücherei ausgeliehen und nie vergessen, weil sie mich damals schon gefangen genommen hatten. Nachdem ich dann die Verfilmung des Adlers der Neunten im Fernsehen gesehen hatte, hat es mich sofort wieder gepackt und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. Die drei Geschichten sind sehr gut erzählt und spannend, die Charaktere werden auch auf relativ wenigen Seiten liebevoll entwickelt und man ist sofort mitten drin im faszinierenden Untergang des römischen Imperiums auf der britischen Insel. Sehr gefällt mir, dass in den drei Büchern ein recht langer Zeitraum behandelt wird und man so einen guten Überblick über die geschichtliche Entwicklung erhält. Ich hatte auch den Eindruck, dass alles historisch gut recherchiert ist. Es gefiel mir auch, dass das Buch ohne brutale Gewaltszenen auskam. Und obwohl ich eine Abneigung gegen dicke Bücher habe, hätten diese Bücher ruhig etwas dicker sein können.
I bought the book after seening the film based on it. The film is certainly not for kids. But this book is certaintly for 10 to 14 year olds only. The story is good but if you want to read good "historical fantasy" books as adult I recommend the Arthur triology from Mary Stewart or the books from Bernard Cornwell.If I was 14 it would get 5 stars alas that is a very long time ago.

Her characters are so true to their period, and yet somehow they are also accessible to modern readers. The romance isn't gushy; indeed, Marcus barely thinks of Cottia at all when he is away. Marcus's growing distaste for slavery might seem anachronistic in a Roman soldier, but Sutcliff shows how that transformation -- a slow one, to be sure, and in no way the focus of the novel -- takes place through the character of Esca. So much meaning is packed into each sentence, with telling descriptions like that of Marcus not being "one of those who must be able to say 'Mine' before they can truly enjoy a thing" (23).Esca is also a brilliantly written character, complex in his divided loyalties and his proud dislike of being a freedman (because of course that meant he had been a slave; his identity would always be tied to that fact). This is why Sutcliff's characters have such resonance; they deal with issues universal in the human experience, like dignity and suffering and disappointment. Marcus is always going to hate his injury and the limp it has given him; Esca is always going to remember his shame as a slave and his defeat in the arena. They must "learn to carry the scars lightly" (272). The profundity of this makes Marcus and Esca read like real people rather than typical adventure-story heroes.I've read this several times and find new things to enjoy each time. This is the first book that features the flawed emerald ring, the family heirloom that finds its way into all of Sutcliff's stories set in ancient Britain. Sutcliff fans will know the one I mean! Her lovely prose elegantly complements the fascinating historical period, and the characters and events are compelling. Overall, this is superb historical fiction from a master storyteller. Highly recommended.
Habe den Adler der Neuten Legion als Schulkind zuletzt gelesen und wollte anläßlich der Verfilmung nachprüfen, ob mein Gedächtnis so schlecht oder das Drehbuch sehr frei nacherzählt ist. Letzteres ist der Fall, das Buch ist aber immer noch so gut, wie ich es in Erinnerung hatte.Sutcliff hat sich zu diesem Buch von zwei wahren Begebenheiten inspirieren lassen: Es ist hinreichend dokumentiert, daß etwa im Jahr 117 v. Chr. die gesamte Neunte Legion, die in den Norden Britanniens marschiert war, um die dort rebellierenden wilden Stämme zu unterwerfen, spurlos verschwand. Etwa 1800 Jahre später wurden bei Ausgrabungen in Silchester die Überreste eines Legionsadlers gefunden, zu dessen Herkunft es diverse Theorien aber keine sichere Erklärung gibt.Um diese beiden historischen Tatsachen strickte die Autorin in den 50er Jahren - daher wohl auch das etwas altertümliche Englisch, das sich aber sehr gut lesen läßt und fast ein bißchen wirkt, als habe jemand das Buch aus dem Lateinischen übersetzt - eine Geschichte um den jungen Zenturio Marcus, dessen Vater mit der Neunten verschwand. In dem Bestreben herauszufinden, was wirklich geschehen ist, und falls möglich die Ehre seiner Familie von jedem Verdacht unehrenhaften Verhaltens reinzuwaschen, macht sich Marcus in Begleitung des Briten Esca auf nach Norden. Dabei hat der Leser reichlich Gelegenheit, sowohl über das Leben in der Römischen Armee als auch das der Zivilisten zu jener Zeit einiges zu erfahren - ob authentisch oder nicht, kann ich als Nicht-Historiker nicht beurteilen, es klingt aber alles ausgesprochen glaubhaft.Wie Marcus und Esca statt Herr und Sklave Freunde werden, und aufrechte Individuen fremder Kulturen einander in Wertschätzung begegnen können, auch wenn sie per definitionem Feinde sind, diese Dimension des Buches erschließt sich möglicherweise erst dem erwachsenen Leser. Für Kinder ist es einfach eine spannende Geschichte mit rätselhaften Vorkommnissen, Verfolungsjagden und allen drum und dran. Die Sprache ist wunderbar knapp und exakt und dabei so einprägsam, daß mir manche Sätze auch nach 25 Jahren tatsächlich noch im Gedächtnis waren.Fazit: Ich hoffe, sehr, daß der Adler der Neunten Legion nicht in Vergessenheit gerät, auch wenn das Thema auf den ersten Blick nicht so furchtbar zeitgemäß anmutet.Hier im Boxed Set mit zwei weiteren Bänden, die sich ebenfalls in der römischen Geschichte bewegen - zum Glück war Sutcliff eine ausgesprochen produktive Autorin, von der noch reichlich andere gute Bücher existieren.
